slogan: [16] Slogan is a Gaelic contribution to English. It comes from sluaghghairm ‘war-cry’, a compound formed from sluagh ‘army’ and ghairm ‘shout’. English at first used it in its original Gaelic sense, and the metaphorical ‘catchphrase’ did not emerge until the 18th century.

古时住在苏格兰高地的盖尔人(Gaels)在向敌人进击时总是发出声声的战斗呐喊,通常是齐声重复呼喊他们氏族或氏族首领的名字。“呐喊”在盖尔语中作sluagh-ghairm‘army cry’,英语slogan 一词正是来源于此。据《牛律英语词典》,它在英语中最早的文字记录见于1513年。1813年美国海军军官佩里(Oliver Hazard Perry,1785 - 1819)因在伊利湖战役中击溃英国舰趴而被誉为民族英雄。在战役前他要水兵把Don't Give Up the Ship(决不放弃舰只)一语印在旗舰“劳伦斯号”的一面三角旗上,并把三角旗系在桅杆顶端。他还对水兵们说了这样一句话:The cry“Don't Give Up the Ship”will be our slogan.这里佩里用slogan一词指“战斗口号”。随着时间的推移,它的词义逐渐扩大为“标语”或“口号”。
