nostril: nostril: [OE] Etymologically, a nostril is a ‘nosehole’. Its Old English ancestor was nosthyrl, a compound formed from nosu ‘nose’ and thyrl ‘hole’. This was a derivative of thurh ‘through’, and still survives as thirl, a dialectal word for ‘hole’.
