The word comes, like its Germanic relatives, German nächste, Dutch naaste, Swedish näst, and Danish næst, from a prehistoric ancestor formed from *nēkh- ‘near’ (from which English nigh is descended) and the superlative suffix *-istaz. A parallel comparative formation has given English near.
