mimeograph (n.)

1889, "copying machine" (invented by Edison), from Greek mimeisthai "to mimic, represent, imitate, portray," in art, "to express by means of imitation," from mimos "mime" (see mime (n.)) + -graphos, from graphein "to write" (see -graphy). A proprietary name from 1903 to 1948. The verb meaning "to reproduce by means of a mimeograph" is first attested 1895. Related: Mimeographed; mimeographing.

1889年美国发明家爱迪生(Thomas A. Edison，1847 -1931)发明（蜡纸）油印机时就“mimeograph命名。浚词系由希腊语mimeomai（模仿）和源于希腊语的英语组合语索graph（含“写”之意）组合而成。在很长一段时间内，mimeograph一直被用作油印机的商标名，到了1948年之后才逐渐变成油印机的属名，以后也用作动词，表示“油印”。

moment 片刻，瞬间

今天用moment 一词表示“片刻”，“瞬间”，但在历史上moment曾是一个计时单位。中世纪表示1/40分或1/50分，18世纪指1秒，1767年有位作家是这样描写时钟有三根指针的：“one for the hours, one for the minutes, and a third for the moments.”而现在moment有时具体指1分，但通常都是作为表示时间的模糊词来用的，其派生形容词为momentary（片刻的）。当它用于“重要性”一义时，其形容词则是momentous（重大的）。就词源而论，moment是14世纪时借自法语的，但却源自拉丁语momentum ‘movement’（运动）。到了17世纪英语把拉丁词momentum也直接借了过来，用以表示“动量”或“势头”。
