Some kinds are aquatic, and some grow as thick-trunked shrubs or trees on African mountains", Modern Latin, named after Matthias de Lobel (1538–1616), Flemish botanist to James I.

由瑞典博物学家林奈（Carolus Linnaeus,1707-1778）命名的植物数以千计，其中有不少植物名称是为纪念植物学家而取的。Lobelia即为一例，它以弗兰芒（Flemish）植物学家Matthias de L'obel/Lobel(1538-1616)的姓氏Lobel命名，由Lobel加植物名词后缀-ia构成。他写了好几部植物学著作，其中与人合著的《植物学志》（1570）一书被誉为现代植物学的里程碑。
