fascism来自意大利语fascismo，而其终极词源则是意为bundle（束，捆）之拉丁语fascis，fascis的复数形式fasces原指中间插着一把战斧，用红带捆绑的一束棍棒，它象征众人团结一致，服从一个意志和权力，也象征国家的权威。古罗马将此用作高级执政官标志或权威标志，第一次世界大战后墨索里尼也将此作为意大利法西斯主义的标志。我们至今还可在美国10分铸币的背面看到这一图案。墨索里尼于1919年建立的Fascisti（法西斯党）正是根据fasces 一词取名的，他最先提出的fascismo（法西斯主义）也是据fasces创造的。
