etiquette: etiquette: [18] Etiquette is, almost literally, ‘just the ticket’. The primary meanings of French étiquette are ‘ticket’ and ‘label’ – and indeed it is the source of English ticket. A particular application of it in former times was to a small card which had written or printed on it directions as to how to behave properly at court – hence it came to mean ‘prescribed code of social behaviour’.

The sense development in French perhaps is from small cards written or printed with instructions for how to behave properly at court (compare Italian etichetta, Spanish etiqueta), and/or from behavior instructions written on a soldier's billet for lodgings (the main sense of the Old French word).

英语单词etiguette（礼仪）和ticket（票）有什么关系？其实它们是同源单词，原本指的是同一事物，即古代在法庭、兵营等地方的墙上张贴的关于礼仪和行为举止要求的小告示，类似于我们现在在一些地方能见到的“请保持肃静”、“请勿吸烟”等告示一样。这两个单词都来自古法语单词estiquette，由estiquer（stick、attach）+ette（小），字面意思就是“可供粘贴的小纸条”。由于在古代这种小纸条、小告示上写的都是关于礼仪和行为举止要求方面的内容，所以衍生出表示“礼仪”的单词etiquette；另一方面，除了用作可贴在墙上的告示外，这种小纸条还可以用作其他多种用途，如门票、电影票、彩票等，因此又衍生出表示“票券”的单词ticket，其拼写方式有较大的简化。

词源同stick, 小木棍，粘，连。原义为粘贴的小卡片，来自法国路易十四时期，给大臣发一张写上注意事项的小卡片，以提醒需要注意的行为和举止。参照同源词ticket.

学过法语的人从其拼写也许猜出它是法语借用词。在16世纪法语中，etiquette原指“标签”，“签条”。其实英语单词ticket（票，标签）亦源于此。法国的官庭礼节一度极为繁琐，每有盛宴就要发给宾客一张纸条或卡片，上面写着应遵循的礼节和应穿何种衣服等，这种纸条或卡片亦称etiquette。以后该词义进而引申为“礼节”或“礼仪”。当etiquette于1750年左右进入英语时，英语就借用了这个词义。一些英国作家，如切斯特菲尔德( Lord Chesterfield，1694 - 1773)和沃波尔（Horace Walpole，1717 - 1797）等用得很多，起了很大的推广作用。美国评论社交礼仪的权威波斯特(Emily PricePost，1872 - 1960)曾写了一本书，书名就叫Etiquette，从1922年首次出版到她去世时已出了10版，印刷达90次之多。因此，etiquette虽然保留了原法语拼写形式，但却是英美人非常熟悉的一个词。其词义至今无甚变化，仍指“礼节”或“礼仪”。
